Dense rainforest on the hills north of the capital, Suva, protected as a small park, where native trees mix with old mahogany plantations and clear streams tumble over small waterfalls into natural pools, a green calm minutes from the city. Shaded trails wind among giant ferns, vines and moss-covered trees, with wooden bridges over the streams, to the Waisila falls and their quiet pools, where visitors rest in the cool. The forest is a refuge for Fiji's colourful birds, such as red parrots, kingfishers and honeyeaters feeding on the trees' fruit, drawing birdwatchers in the morning. Rain is frequent, so it stays green and damp all year. The small entry fee differs between sources. Trails are slippery after rain, so wear proper shoes. It is hot and humid most of the year, so carry water and insect repellent. Fiji's cyclone season runs from November to April, so follow weather warnings, per UK travel advice.
