Macau's quietest corner, a small fishing village on the west coast of Coloane island at the far south of Macau, with narrow lanes, low colourful houses and a little harbour, far from the crowds of the old town and the hotel towers. At its centre lies a small square paved in the Portuguese style, overlooked by a little yellow-and-white chapel and ringed by cafés, while the waterfront has seafood restaurants and a bakery famed for the Portuguese egg tarts that have become a symbol of Macau. Coloane itself is green, covered with hills and trails; its highest point, at 170.6 metres, is the highest in all of Macau, and on its east coast lies the wide Hac Sa Beach, which can be combined with the village in half a day. The village is free and always open and is served by public buses from the peninsula and Taipa, per visitor guides. Late afternoon is the loveliest time; the egg tarts are its best-known treat, while the Portuguese restaurants' dishes often use pork.
