Conceição da Barra is the northernmost coastal town of Espírito Santo, with about 29,000 people some 250 kilometres from Vitória, at the mouth of the São Mateus River; the famous dune village of Itaúnas belongs to it. It is one of the oldest towns in the state, dating from 1554, when the Portuguese landed north of the mouth of a great river the local people called Kiri-Kerê; the Indigenous inhabitants and survivors of a Spanish shipwreck helped them settle. The town prospered early thanks to its port, where ships from Bahia and Pernambuco called. Its lands hold the Itaúnas State Park, which protects the coast up to the Bahia border, the Rio Preto National Forest and part of the Córrego Grande Biological Reserve. Visitors come for its beaches, the river mouth and the mangroves, and it is busiest in summer and at Carnival.
