Conceição do Mato Dentro is a historic town of about 25,000 people in central Minas Gerais, some 170 kilometres north of Belo Horizonte at the foot of the Espinhaço range, and the base for visiting the famous Tabuleiro waterfall, one of the tallest in Brazil. Its history goes back to the gold finds of the early eighteenth century: in 1704 an expedition led by Gaspar Ponce de León, Gaspar Soares and Manuel Correia de Paiva crossed rugged mountains and found gold in abundance in the Santo Antônio River, and the village of Conceição soon grew. Its centre still keeps houses and streets from the gold era, and the municipality now combines mining, tourism and farming. Mountains, waterfalls and trails surround it, making it a good overnight stop before the waterfall trip.
