A small, quiet town on a green mountainside in the Yungas at about 1,700 metres, where the Andes drop towards the Amazon forests, with a warm, humid climate quite unlike La Paz's chill, ringed by coffee, banana and citrus farms and forest-clad mountains. Paceños and visitors come here to rest after the cold and altitude, and it has lodges with gardens, pools and views over valleys and clouds. From town, trails lead to nearby waterfalls and up Uchumachi hill for a wide view, and tours visit coffee farms. The area is home to an Afro-Bolivian community whose ancestors arrived in colonial times to work in mines and on farms, with their own music and dance traditions. The small main square is a pleasant place to sit in the evening. Reach it by minibus from La Paz on the modern road, or at the end of a Yungas Road bike tour. Bolivia is under a state of emergency with protests and road blockades, so check road conditions and your government's travel advice before the trip.
