Corumbá de Goiás is a small town of about 10,500 people in eastern Goiás, some 110 kilometres from Goiânia and a short drive from Pirenópolis; it is one of the oldest towns in the state and still keeps traces of its colonial architecture. Macro-Jê peoples lived in the area before Europeans, and settlement began on 8 September 1731 when Portuguese and São Paulo explorers found gold in the Corumbá River and the Bagagem stream, putting up the first miners' huts that grew into the town. The Areias River runs through its land, ringed by cerrado plateaus and many waterfalls, the best known being the Salto de Corumbá on the Corumbá River. It makes a quiet addition to a visit to Pirenópolis, with stone streets and old houses away from the crowds.
