Cosquín is a town in the Punilla valley in the Córdoba hills, on the banks of its namesake river at the foot of Cerro Pan de Azúcar, «Sugarloaf Hill». It is known across Argentina as the capital of folk music: the first National Folklore Festival was held here in 1961 and still takes place every January in its main square, alongside a national crafts fair. Outside festival time the town is quiet, visited for summer swims and rest on the banks of the Cosquín and Yuspe rivers, and for the chairlift up Cerro Pan de Azúcar, whose summit gives a wide view over the valley and the Córdoba hills. A riverside promenade runs along the water. Wandering is free; the festival and chairlift charge. It is about an hour's drive from Córdoba.
