Gualeguaychú is a city in southern Entre Ríos near the border with Uruguay, stretched along the Gualeguaychú river, and its loveliest feature is its riverfront: a long tree-shaded avenue with small river beaches, benches, cafés and a small old port. Across the bridge lies Parque Unzué, more than a hundred hectares of woods and paths laid out in the 1920s, popular for picnics and cycling. The city is famous in summer for its great carnival, the «Carnaval del País», held on weekends from about January to March in a purpose-built stadium and counted among Argentina's biggest; it also has thermal spa complexes. The riverfront is open and free. The city is about three hours by car from Buenos Aires.
