Crescent Island Game Sanctuary is among the most popular stops on Lake Naivasha, a rare place where you can walk among giraffes and zebras without a vehicle. It suits families well, but remember these are wild animals. Its name reflects its crescent shape, and the deepest part of the lake, about 30 m, lies near it. As the lake has risen, the land around it has changed, and a map at the visitor centre shows its outline. You land from the boat and walk with a guide across open grassland and yellow acacias, with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, waterbuck and impala close by. Colourful birds move through the trees, and the lake and distant mountains appear on nearly every side. You reach it by boat from the lakeshore, 3.6 km in a straight line from the lake's map point. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat and water, as shade is scarce. Keep your distance from the animals, do not feed them and stay away from their young. Early morning is pleasantly cool, and agree the tour's length with your guide before setting out.
