A deep-blue volcanic crater lake at the foot of Cotacachi volcano, about 3,000 metres up, with two green-covered islands in the middle formed by volcanic domes. Its Kichwa name means «guinea-pig lake», as one island's shape recalls one. The finest way to see it is the rim trail, a loop of about 14 kilometres taking four to five hours, with changing views over the lake, volcanoes and valleys, among mountain plants, flowers and hummingbirds. Those not wanting the long walk enjoy the lookouts near the entrance. Small boats run short trips around the islands, and the visitor centre explains the ecological reserve the lake belongs to. Nearby Cotacachi town is known for leather goods. The sun is strong and the wind cold on the rim, so bring a jacket, sunscreen and water. Mornings are clearest for the volcano.
