Cumbuco is a seaside village in Caucaia, west of Fortaleza within its metropolitan area, famous worldwide as an international mecca of kitesurfing: strong, steady winds blow for much of the year, filling the horizon with coloured kites. Behind the beach lie broad sand dunes and freshwater lagoons, which visitors tour in dune buggies with local drivers, climbing and plunging down the dunes and stopping at the lagoons to swim and play in the water. On the beach are the fishermen's traditional jangada sailing rafts. Visitors reach it by bus or car from Fortaleza, and it makes a good day trip. Choose a licensed buggy driver, agree the route and price before setting off, and ask for the gentle ride if you have children with you.
