Cumuruxatiba, «Cumuru» to locals, is a coastal village in the municipality of Prado in the far south of Bahia, home to about nine thousand people, and one of the region's quiet beach destinations between Prado and Corumbau. Its sea is calm and its beaches little visited, some of them secluded, with natural pools and coloured cliffs of clay and sand. The village centre has a simple rustic feel, with few buildings on the seafront, so the shore stays open to walkers. It is reached by a 32-kilometre dirt road from central Prado, past fine coastal scenery. It was created as a district of Prado in 1896, lies near the Descobrimento National Park of Atlantic forest, and humpback whales can be seen offshore in winter.
