Sanya's closest beach to the city centre, a small bay between Luhuitou hill to the west and green hills to the east, with about a kilometre of sand shaded by coconut palms; Sanya's beach culture began here before resorts spread to the other bays. The area is lively with mid-range hotels, restaurants, cafés and shops, and the beach offers plenty of water sports such as boat rides, snorkelling and jet skis; the water stays warm even in winter, rarely dropping much below 20 °C. It suits those who want the sea and the city together, a short ride from central Sanya and its markets; in the evening the promenade fills with people watching the sunset, and Luhuitou hill above it looks out over the whole bay. The beach is free; sunbeds and water sports are paid separately, per visitor guides. It gets crowded during the winter holidays and Chinese New Year, and many restaurants serve pork and alcohol, though seafood and vegetable dishes are easy to order.
