A unique village in north Shenzhen that since 1989 has become a world centre of oil painting, when the painter Huang Jiang began copying famous paintings here; many painters followed until the village grew into a whole industry. Its lanes are packed with hundreds of studios and small galleries where artists paint in front of visitors, copying works by the great masters alongside original paintings in many styles, shipped from here around the world. Visitors can buy a finished painting, order a copy of a work of their choice or commission a portrait at a reasonable price, and the village has an art museum and shops selling painting supplies and frames. Entry is free and open all day, and prices are negotiable, so ask about shipping and packing before buying. Weekdays are the best time, when the painters are busy at work.
