A small, quiet town on Chiloé's east coast, facing a narrow channel and Quinchao Island, with wooden houses clad in small scale-like shingles, colourful fishing boats and one of Chiloé's UNESCO-listed wooden churches. Its best-known feature is the craft market in a modern wooden building on the waterfront, where artisans from nearby villages sell hand-made woollens, sweaters, socks, hats and blankets, baskets of wicker and fibre, and woodwork. The market is busiest at weekends. On the waterfront are a pier and small restaurants serving local seafood and empanadas, and from the next pier a ferry crosses the channel in minutes to Quinchao Island and the town of Achao with its old wooden church. The best time is Sunday morning when the market is in full swing. Southern Chile is often rainy, even in summer, so bring a rain jacket.
