A sprawling zoo on the wooded hills of the Baiyunshan area in south Dalian, opened in 1997 to replace the city's old zoo, whose roots go back to a park laid out in 1909; it covers about 7.2 square kilometres. It has two parts: the enclosure area, with a giant panda house opened in 2012, tigers, wolves and birds, and the safari area added in 2000, where animals such as zebras roam open hillside. A cable car crosses the hills with views of the sea. Tickets are about CNY 120 from April to October and CNY 100 in winter, the cable car costs extra, and it is open from 9 am to 4 pm, per visitor guides. The zoo is large and hilly, so allow at least half a day.
