**A fortified town on a hill above the harbour, with complete 16th-century star walls — and a World Heritage site** — above Ibiza town. ⚠ **The walls are the monument**: **built between 1554 and 1585** by order of Philip II ⚠ **when Ottoman power and piracy threatened the western Mediterranean**; ✅ **and they are **among the most complete star fortifications surviving anywhere** — **seven bastions and an unbroken circuit**. ✅ **Inside is a living town**: **climbing stone lanes, white houses, a cathedral at the summit, and a castle**. ⚠ **And Ibiza is far older than its image**: **the Phoenicians founded it in the 7th century BC** — **and the city lies under the city**. ✅ **Entry is free** — **an open town, not a walled site with a ticket**.

**No — the island is far larger than its image, and most of it is countryside, quiet beaches and villages.** ⚠ **The image**: **Ibiza is known worldwide for its large nightclubs** — ✅ **and that is real**: **major clubs in San Antonio and the Playa d'en Bossa area**, **and summer seasons with international names**. ⚠ **But they concentrate in particular places** — **not across the island**. ✅ **The rest**: ⚠ **the island covers 570 square kilometres** — **and its north (Sant Joan, Santa Agnès) is entirely quiet countryside**: **almond fields, small villages, winding roads and little rocky coves**; ✅ **with no relation at all to the party image**. ✅ **The heritage**: **Dalt Vila and its walls**, **the Phoenician necropolis of Puig des Molins**, **and the Ses Salines reserve** — ⚠ **all three within the island's UNESCO listing**. ✅ **And timing decides everything**: ⚠ **July and August are the peak of parties, crowds and prices** — ✅ **while May, June, September and October are a wholly different island**: **excellent weather, far lower prices, and clubs quieter or shut**. ⚠ **And in winter it nearly closes** — **many restaurants and hotels shut**.
