Nha Trang's central market, named after the lagoon (dam) that once filled the site, where an older market stood from about 1908. After a great fire in 1968 a famous round building was put up here, completed in 1972, its folded roof meant to suggest a lotus opening on the water, and it became a symbol of the city. That round hall has since been closed after being rated unsafe, and trade has moved to a three-storey market built behind it and opened in 2016; the site is due to be redeveloped between 2027 and 2030. The ground-floor stalls and those around sell the region's dried seafood, from squid and fish to shrimp and jellyfish, along with bird's-nest products from the islands, cashews, coffee and fruit; the upper floors have clothes, fabrics and souvenirs. Prices for visitors start high, so bargain, especially for clothes. The market is busiest in the morning.
