Polished rock.
One of the north coast's best-known adventures: twenty-seven small falls in a row on the Damajagua River, dropping into turquoise pools inside a narrow limestone gorge hung with plants and roots; the area is a natural monument. Visitors first hike up through forest to the highest fall they have chosen, then come down with the river: jumping from rocks into deep pools, sliding down natural chutes polished by the water and swimming through narrow passages between the walls, with guides beside them every step. You can choose seven, twelve or all twenty-seven falls; most visitors stop at the first seven, while the full route needs good fitness and about four hours. For those who would rather not jump, a side path goes around each fall. A guide is compulsory and supplies a helmet and life jacket, without which no one may enter. Wear water shoes or trainers that can get wet. Rocks are slippery and water rises fast after rain, so follow the guides and do not swim when the current is strong.
