A walled garrison town about 55 km from central Shenzhen, near Daya Bay, built in 1394 under the Ming dynasty to guard the coast against pirates. Under the Qing it became the base of a naval garrison, and today it is a protected national monument and a listed historic village. The town keeps its four gates, parts of its wall and lanes of old houses, among them the mansions of military commanders, the finest being that of the Qing naval commander Lai Enjue, as well as its old well. Its people speak the Dapeng dialect, a mix of Hakka and Cantonese, and Shenzhen's nickname, «Pengcheng», is said to come from it. Entry to the town is free and it is open all day, while the halls and museums inside open from 9 am to 5.30 pm, with a joint ticket of about CNY 20, per visitor guides.
