Unhesitatingly for families and castle lovers: it is the Netherlands' grandest castle and the nearest to the "fairy-tale castle" imagination, its interior exceptional. Only 20 minutes from Utrecht. Just check the traditional autumn closure (weeks when the owning family stays there). The gardens alone are worth it even if the castle is shut.

De Haar Castle is the largest and most magnificent castle in the Netherlands, on Utrecht's edge: a fairy-tale fortress of pointed towers, moats, drawbridges and vast gardens โ it looks medieval, but is in fact a grand reconstruction (1892) on a ruined castle's remains, designed by the famous architect Pierre Cuypers (of the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station). The interior is breathtaking splendour: halls with carved wooden ceilings, huge fireplaces, and furnishings and treasures gathered by the Austrian Rothschild family (the baron married the castle's heiress) โ complete European aristocratic opulence. And the English-style gardens with their veteran trees and lakes are among the Netherlands' loveliest. A half-day trip from Utrecht (about 20 minutes) โ an exceptional family and aristocratic destination, the nearest thing to a real Disney castle in the Netherlands.
