Delmiro Gouveia is a town of about 52,000 people in the far west of Alagoas, in the São Francisco River sertão at 256 metres, a short drive from Paulo Afonso, where the borders of Alagoas, Pernambuco, Sergipe and Bahia meet. Its land was part of grants auctioned in Recife in 1769, where Captain Faustino Vieira Sandes set up a cattle ranch around which the first villages grew. Once called Pedra, it took the name of the pioneering businessman Delmiro Gouveia, who in the early twentieth century built a textile mill here and the Angiquinho hydroelectric plant on the river falls, one of the first power plants in the North-East. The municipality includes part of the São Francisco River Natural Monument, with its rocky canyons and green water visited by boat. It makes a stop for visitors to Paulo Afonso and the river canyons.
