Den Blå Planet is Northern Europe's largest aquarium and its finest building: an aluminium whirlpool on the Øresund shore (2013) designed as a water vortex drawing you from the entrance into five oceanic arms — and its coastal site right by the airport makes it the ideal first or last stop of a Copenhagen trip. Its arms are worlds: the Ocean with a four-million-litre tank crossed by a glass tunnel beneath hammerheads, rays and nurse sharks, the Amazon as a humid forest of anaconda, piranha and free-flying butterflies overhead, the cold North with sea otters (the house stars) and Atlantic puffins — and touch pools of starfish for the small. The restaurant overlooks the Øresund and its bridge toward Sweden — and airport buses reach it in a quarter-hour: three conditioned hours for Copenhagen's inevitable rainy day.
