The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is the main church of the Archdiocese of Dili, in the centre of Timor-Leste's capital. It is a wide white building with a tall triangular roof and a slim bell tower beside it, a large square in front and a gate topped with white angel statues. Planning began in 1984, it opened on 2 November 1988, and at the time it was said to be the largest cathedral in South-East Asia. It covers 1,800 square metres on a 10,000-square-metre plot and holds 2,000 people. Pope John Paul II blessed it in October 1989. You walk the wide square, seeing the white front with its arched windows, the tall tower and the flowering trees around it. It is a working church, so dress modestly if you go in, enter quietly and do not take photos during Mass. The cathedral is in central Dili, about 1 km from the Government Palace. Entry is free and donations are welcome. Keep belongings safe, avoid carrying much cash and agree taxi fares before setting off.
