Dilijan National Park is one of Armenia's four national parks, covering 240 square kilometres in Tavush Province in the northeast, around the town of Dilijan. It is known for its forest landscapes, rich wildlife, mineral water springs, natural and cultural monuments, and wide network of hiking trails. The park was set up in 2002 on the basis of a state nature reserve founded in 1958. In 2017 and 2018 its ecotourism trails were restored, and an 80 km section of the Transcaucasian Trail was added. The park spreads over the slopes of several mountain ranges at between 1,070 and 2,300 metres, crossed by the Aghstev River and its tributaries. Dense broadleaf forest cloaks the slopes and turns gold in autumn, broken by small lakes such as Gosh Lake and Lake Parz and streams running between rocks, with snow-capped peaks looking down in spring. Visitors follow marked trails through the forests and past the lakes, and many combine the visit with the region's old monasteries and the town of Dilijan. Spring and autumn are the loveliest seasons; wear good walking shoes.
