Dimitsana is a mountain village in Arcadia in the Peloponnese, southern Greece, about 31 km northwest of Tripoli in a straight line. It is a registered traditional settlement and the seat of the municipality of Gortynia. The village is built on the ruins of the ancient Arcadian town of Teuthis, on a mountain slope at 950 metres. Its name is first recorded in 967. It has a historic library and an open-air water-power museum showing the old mills and workshops once driven by mountain water. Grey stone houses with red tiled roofs step down the edge of the Lousios valley, topped by a stone clock tower and surrounded by green forested mountains. From its southern side there is a wonderful view over the Megalopolis plain to the Taygetus mountains on the horizon. Visitors wander the stone-paved lanes between old houses and visit the water-power museum below the village. Many walk the trails of the nearby Lousios gorge; the village is especially lovely in autumn and winter and makes a good base for Arcadia's mountain villages.
