Cabra Corral is a broad reservoir south of Salta city, spreading over some 13,000 hectares between red and green hills, behind a dam that generates power for northwest Argentina, supplies irrigation water and holds back floods. Its name is Quechua for «goat corral». The lake has become Salta's nearby playground: campgrounds and picnic areas line its shores, with water sports, boats and catamaran rides, fishing, and rafting trips on the river below the dam. It is especially beautiful when the lake fills after the rainy season. The nearest town, Coronel Moldes, is about 62 kilometres from Salta, and the dam itself about 85. Wandering the shores is free; activities with operators cost extra.
