Cuesta del Viento, «Wind Slope», is a reservoir in northern San Juan province, where the Río Blanco and the Arroyo Iglesia meet to form the Jáchal river, five kilometres from the small town of Rodeo. The dam was built for power and irrigation, but its fame comes from the wind. The lake stays calm until midday, then the wind builds until it blows hard in the afternoon, at up to eighty kilometres an hour, making this one of the world's best spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing and a host of international championships. The view alone is striking: turquoise water among bare, desert-coloured mountains. The best season for the sports is October to April, with schools and gear rental on the shore. Rooms are available in Rodeo and nearby villages.
