Punta Negra is a dam and lake on the San Juan river west of San Juan city, between the Ullum and Zonda departments. Work began in 2010 and it opened in 2015 as the province's fourth dam, built to generate power and to regulate the water below the Los Caracoles dam upstream. The turquoise lake stretches between bare desert mountains in browns and reds, a striking contrast of water and rock; the road runs beside it and over the dam wall, and viewpoints look out over the lake, the valley and the power station below. Wandering and viewing are free, and it pairs easily with the nearby Ullum dam on a half-day trip from the city.
