The first theme park opened by the Walt Disney Company, and the only one designed and built under Walt Disney's personal supervision, opened on 17 July 1955 in Anaheim, about 40 kilometres south-east of downtown Los Angeles. Disney first wanted to build it next to his studios in Burbank, found the site too small for his ideas, and in 1953 bought 65 hectares near Anaheim, gathering a design team that became the core of Walt Disney Imagineering. Visitors enter along Main Street, U.S.A., modelled on an early 20th-century American town, past the railway station with its clock tower, to Sleeping Beauty Castle and on to Adventureland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, with shows, parades and fireworks. One-day, one-park tickets start from about $104 and rise on busy days, per visitor guides, and Disney California Adventure stands next door. Give it a full day, book ahead and avoid school holidays if you can.
