The third-largest mosque in the world after the mosques of Mecca and Medina and the largest in Africa, standing on the Bay of Algiers in Mohammadia and crowned by the world's tallest minaret, 265 metres high, visible across the capital and from the sea. The mosque was officially inaugurated in February 2024 and has a vast prayer hall holding tens of thousands of worshippers, with a great dome, marble columns, fine Andalusian and Maghrebi ornament, huge chandeliers and a broad courtyard with fountains and gardens. The minaret is not only for the call to prayer but a tower of thirty-seven floors with a museum of Islamic art and history and a research centre, topped by a panoramic viewing deck over the bay and the whole city. The complex also has a large library and a school of Quranic studies. Entry for prayer is free, and the visitor areas such as the minaret deck and museum usually open from 9 am to 5 pm, some possibly with fees. Modest dress is mandatory, and women cover their hair.
