Its method was entirely unlike Delphi's: there was no priestess speaking, but a **sacred oak**, whose **rustling leaves** in the wind the priests interpreted as the words of **Zeus**. **Homer** mentions it in the Odyssey โ which places it in the oldest layers of Greek memory. Enquirers wrote their questions on **thin lead tablets**, and thousands have been found โ everyday questions about marriage, travel, trade and illness, and among **the most valuable evidence we have of ordinary people's lives** in the ancient world. โ The most striking survival is the restored **theatre**, one of the largest in Greece, seating around **17,000**. โ And the site is **very quiet and nearly empty** โ the exact opposite of Delphi.

**The closest thing we have to the "voice" of ordinary people in the ancient world โ and the most valuable thing about Dodona.** โ **How it worked**: an enquirer came to the sanctuary, **wrote his question on a thin strip of lead** (cheap and easy to inscribe), folded it and handed it in โ and the answer was then interpreted for him. **Thousands of these tablets have been found** on the site. โ **Why they are exceptional**: because most of what survives from antiquity was **written by elites about elites** โ kings, wars and philosophy. These are the questions of **ordinary named people**: "should I marry her?", "should I travel to trade?", "who stole my cushion?", "is the child mine?", "how do I recover from my illness?". โ **They reveal** what actually worried people: money, marriage, children, health and travel โ the same concerns as today. โ **They are not on site**: they are displayed in the **Ioannina Archaeological Museum** โ so visit it before or after.
**Delphi if you must choose one; but Dodona gives you what Delphi cannot.** โ **Delphi has the stronger setting and richer content**: the astonishing mountain frame, the Sacred Way, the treasuries, and a first-rank museum with the Charioteer. There is no comparison in scale or fame. โ **The price of that**: **coaches and crowds** between 10 and 2, an exposed slope, and higher prices. โ **Dodona gives you three things Delphi lacks**: **quiet** โ you may be alone in a theatre built for seventeen thousand; **antiquity** โ it is the oldest oracle in Greece and Homer named it; and **closeness to ordinary people** through the lead tablets, which has no equivalent at Delphi at all. โ **The practical conclusion**: do not choose between them if you are visiting both on one trip โ **they are in different regions** (Delphi in central Greece, Dodona in the northwest) and belong to separate legs. โ And if you are in Ioannina, Dodona is **obvious**: 20 km and one hour.
