Doi Chiang Dao is a 2,175-metre limestone mountain in Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, about 6 km west-northwest of Chiang Dao town and 69 km north of Chiang Mai city in a straight line. It is one of the highest peaks of the Daen Lao Range on the Thai side. The mountain is part of the Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary and is one of the most visited birdwatching sites in Thailand, with over 300 bird species, including rare ones. In 2021 UNESCO declared it a biosphere reserve, the fifth in Thailand. The jagged grey limestone peaks rise above green forest and the rice fields of the valley, often wrapped in cloud and mist. From the summit at sunrise a view opens over a sea of clouds above the surrounding mountains, and rare mountain plants cover the upper slopes. Visitors admire the mountain from the town and the rice fields below, and hikers may climb to the summit only with a local guide during a set open season, so check the current rules before planning. Birdwatchers come in the early morning.
