A historic academy in central Wuxi founded in 1111 under the Northern Song by the Confucian scholar Yang Shi, who taught there for eighteen years and named it Donglin, «Eastern Grove», after a monastery at the foot of Mount Lu whose setting he had admired. Neglected for centuries, it was revived in 1604 by the scholar Gu Xiancheng and his colleagues and became the centre of a circle of scholars and officials known as the Donglin movement, which called for honest government and criticised corruption at court in the late Ming; it is famous for a couplet urging students to care about the affairs of the country and its people. Gateways, halls and quiet courtyards follow one another in a simple traditional style, with the lecture hall, a small pond and garden, and an exhibition on its history and the Donglin movement. Entry is free with an advance booking through its official account, with opening from 9:00 to 17:00 and last entry at 16:30, per visitor guides.
