Dosan Seowon is a private Confucian academy near the city of Andong, South Korea, founded in 1574 to honour the Confucian scholar Yi Hwang four years after his death. It is one of the most important academies in Korean history and part of the Seowon World Heritage Site. Yi Hwang retired here in 1549 and began building the school, and his students finished it after he died. The academy taught the classics and held memorial rites for the sages, and it was home to the Toegye school of thought for over 400 years. Yi Hwang appears on the Korean 1,000-won note. You see simple wooden buildings with grey tiled roofs and white walls, climbing stone terraces on a wooded hillside. Low walls of earth and stone surround them, a sandy yard and ancient trees lie in front, and the Nakdong River runs close by. It is about 20 km from central Andong in a straight line. It is a quiet place, and it can be combined with Hahoe Folk Village on the same day.
