The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Douala, in the Bonadibong district near the city centre. It is one of Douala's most striking older buildings, with two white towers topped by small domes. It stands near the Wouri River in Cameroon's largest city and main port. French Spiritan fathers built it in 1936, on the legacy of the German missionaries who came before them. Catholicism in Cameroon dates from 1890, when Father Vieter landed in Douala with seven missionaries on 25 October and celebrated the first Mass the next day. You see a long white building with arched windows and two tall square towers on the facade, each topped by a small grey dome and a cross. A broad square, a small white statue and palm trees lie before it. From a distance the towers rise above the district's roofs and trees. It is about 1 km from central Douala in a straight line. Douala traffic is heavy, so allow plenty of time. Dress modestly, respect Mass times and ask before taking photos inside.
