Asia's largest fresh-flower market, in Dounan in south Kunming, the «City of Eternal Spring», whose mild climate all year round has made Yunnan the centre of flower growing in China. Its vast halls are filled with thousands of kinds of roses, lilies, carnations, orchids and dried plants, sold wholesale and retail at very low prices, and flowers are shipped from here every day across China and the world. It's most striking in the evening, when traders crowd in and the flowers are laid out in a loud, colourful scene; you can buy huge bouquets for a token price, or dried flowers that travel well as gifts. Entry is free, and the market is busiest in the evening, so arrive in the late afternoon. If you buy flowers to take home, check your country's rules on bringing in plants.
