An oasis town in Kebili governorate known as the gateway to the Sahara, where the oases end and the golden dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental begin. In the past it was an important stop on the trans-Saharan caravan routes. Douz is surrounded by a huge oasis of more than half a million palms producing the famous Deglet Nour dates. At the edge of town, near the Gateway to the Sahara monument, the dunes begin straight away, and camel, quad and 4x4 trips set off from there into the deep desert. You can ride a camel for an hour at sunset, or spend a night in a desert camp under the stars. In town, the small Museum of the Sahara shows Bedouin life, tools and tents. Every winter, usually in November or December, the International Festival of the Sahara brings camel races, horsemanship, poetry and Bedouin music. October to April is the best time to visit, as summer is extremely hot.
