Dragon's Back is a mountain ridge in southeastern Hong Kong Island, passing over Shek O Peak in Shek O Country Park. CNN named its trail among the world's 23 best in 2019, and it is one of the city's best known and most accessible walks. The route forms part of Stage 8 of the Hong Kong Trail and runs along the ridgeline like the rippling back of a dragon, which gives it the name. Small islands, green bays and the village of Shek O on its rocky headland lie ahead, and paragliders sometimes drift down towards the beach. The path begins with a climb through trees on stone and earth steps, then comes out on the open ridge with views on both sides. Shek O Peak has a small marker, long grass and a fresh breeze. You can carry on down to Big Wave Bay beach, where the trail ends, and a short bus links it to Shek O beach. Buses run from Shau Kei Wan to the start at To Tei Wan. Much of it is exposed, so bring water and a hat, and wear suitable shoes, as some sections are rocky and unfit for sandals. The country parks have no rubbish bins, so carry your litter out. Keep to the right, and avoid wet or very hot days.
