A modern district in west Dubai built around a man-made canal three kilometres long on the Gulf shore, its water brought in from the sea into what was desert. It can house more than 120,000 people, and some of the world's tallest residential towers line the canal. More than 12 per cent of the district is public space, mostly the water itself and the landscaped Marina Walk, which runs for some eight kilometres around the canal, with restaurants, cafés and berths for yachts and boats. Visitors stroll the promenade between towers and yachts, ride water taxis and canal cruises, and walk on to the nearby JBR beach. Marine life occasionally swims into the canal, which lies close to the open sea. It is free and always open, with easy access by Dubai Metro and tram. Evenings are best, when the towers light up and reflect in the water.
