One of the oldest zoos in the world, designed by the architect Decimus Burton in 1830 and opened the following year, spreading over more than 28 hectares of Phoenix Park and one of Dublin's most popular family outings. The animals live in habitats built to resemble their homes in the wild, including the African Savanna with giraffes and zebras, the Gorilla Rainforest, the Kaziranga Forest Trail with its herd of Asian elephants, and Sea Lion Cove. Today the zoo focuses on conservation projects and breeding programmes for endangered species, with educational talks and keeper encounters through the day, which makes it a fun and rewarding trip for children. Adult tickets are €22.50 online and €26.50 at the gate, per its official website. Allow at least half a day and combine it with a walk in the surrounding Phoenix Park.
