Huge sand dunes spread around Fiambalá, made famous worldwide when the Dakar Rally crossed them, and the easiest to reach are the Saujil dunes, about ten kilometres north of town. The best known, the «Magic Dune», rises some ninety metres at a slope close to 45 degrees, between the mountains and the valley's orchards. Visitors climb it on foot and slide down on sandboards, which can be rented in shops near Fiambalá's main square. From town, 4x4 and quad-bike trips head west to taller, steeper dunes such as Tatón and Medanitos. Visiting is free. The best times are early morning, before the sand heats up, or just before sunset when the dunes take on colour. Summer, December to March, is very hot, so bring water and a hat.
