Dunhinda Falls is a waterfall in the lower central hills of Sri Lanka, about 5 km from Badulla and some 18 km northeast of Ella in a straight line. It is one of the island's most popular and picturesque waterfalls. The Badulu Oya, the river that runs through Badulla, forms the 64-metre falls. The name comes from the Sinhala word dun, meaning mist or smoke, for the smoky spray that rises at its base. Though not among the country's tallest, it is renowned for its dramatic look and natural setting. Heavy white water pours from a brown and grey rock face into a broad green pool, mist rising above it, ringed by thick forest and big boulders. Along the way there is a smaller fall known as Little Dunhinda. Visitors enter at Dunhinda Junction on the Badulla–Mahiyangana road and walk about 1 km along a dedicated footpath lined with stalls selling herbal drinks and local snacks. The path narrows in places, so take care; there is parking near the entrance.
