Durbuy is a small town in Belgium's Luxembourg Province, in the Ardennes of the southeast, on the river Ourthe. It lies about 32 km in a straight line from Liège and 40 km from Dinant. In the Middle Ages Durbuy was an important centre of trade and industry, and John I, Count of Luxembourg, raised it to the rank of city in 1331. For commercial reasons it calls itself «the world's smallest city». The Ursel family has lived in its castle since the 18th century, and the present castle was built in 1880. In the nearby village of Wéris stand prehistoric dolmens and menhirs. Grey stone houses with dark slate roofs crowd narrow cobbled lanes, centred on the castle and its pointed towers by the river. The calm Ourthe flows alongside, wooded hills surround the town, and visitors paddle kayaks on the water. The town is tiny and can be walked in an hour or two, with plenty of restaurants. The castle is private, so admire it from outside.
