One of the largest urban lakes in China, its scenic area covering 88 square kilometres, 33 of them water, with China's top tourism rating; it is Wuhan's green escape among hills, woods and islands. The lake is divided into several areas, the best known being Tingtao on the west shore near the Hubei Museum, Moshan hill with its flower gardens, famous for plum and cherry blossom in late winter and spring, and quiet Luoyan Island. A long greenway for walking and cycling circles the lake across bridges, woods and causeways over the water, with bikes for hire along it and sightseeing carts and buses running too, while Wuhan University lies on its south shore. Entry to the lake and to Moshan's main gate is free, with some gardens in flower season, carts and bikes paid separately, per visitor guides. Wuhan summers are very hot, so spring and autumn are the best seasons.
