East Rennell is the southern part of Rennell Island, the southernmost of the Solomon Islands, and a World Heritage Site since 1998. Dense forest covers the island, and at its centre lies the wide Lake Tegano, with calm water, small green islands and cliffs around it. Rennell is the largest raised coral atoll in the world, about 86 km long and 15 km wide. Lake Tegano was once the atoll's lagoon; its surface is now at sea level and its water brackish, with small limestone islands. About 800 people live around it in four villages, relying on farming and fishing. In 2013 the site was put on the list of World Heritage in Danger because of logging. You cross the lake in a small boat between islands covered in palms and trees, watching the still water mirror the forest and birds on the branches. On the shore stand wooden houses. Many species found nowhere else live here. The lake is about 268 km in a straight line south of Honiara, reached by small plane and then by road and boat. Services are very few, so arrange travel and lodging with the villages ahead and respect their land.
