**A strong earthquake reshaped Lefkada's west coast โ and its effects persist today.** โ **The event**: on **17 November 2015** an earthquake of about magnitude **6.5** struck west of Lefkada. โ **The greatest effect was on the cliffs**: the west coast is a **steep, already fractured limestone wall**, **and whole sections of it collapsed** into the sea. โ **What changed**: **Egremni's stairway** (some 350 steps) **was buried** under thousands of tonnes of rock; **the beach itself was reshaped** and widened in places by the fallen debris; **and a coast road closed** for a time. โ **Why it matters to you today**: **the cliff has not fully stabilised** โ **rockfalls still occur**, which is why routes are closed and reopened **according to renewed engineering assessment**. โ **The practical rule**: **do not trust an old guidebook or video** about how to get down โ **ask locally on the day**, โ **and never pass a closure sign**: the hazard here is **rock falling from height**, against which alertness is no protection.

**A long beach beneath an immense white cliff, whose shape changed entirely in the 2015 earthquake** โ on Lefkada's west coast, north of Porto Katsiki. Egremni was **the longest and best known of the west coast beaches** after Porto Katsiki, **reached by a long stairway** of some **three hundred and fifty steps**. โ **Then came the earthquake of November 2015**: the cliff face collapsed entirely, **burying the stairway under rock** and reshaping the beach itself โ **making land access difficult or impossible for years**. โ **The situation today keeps changing**: a path or stairway has been partly reopened at times **and closed again at others**, **and old information cannot be relied on**. โ **The boat is the dependable way**: daily trips from Nidri and Vasiliki. โ And the beach itself is **wider and quieter** than Porto Katsiki.
