The Eibsee is a mountain lake in Bavaria, southern Germany, at the northern foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, about 10 km southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and 88 km southwest of Munich in a straight line. Its name means «yew lake». The lake lies at 973 metres, covers 177 hectares and is 34.5 metres deep at its deepest. The Zugspitze rises to about 2,950 metres 3.5 km to the south. It lies in the municipality of Grainau, is privately owned and is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the Bavarian Alps. The clear water shines emerald green, scattered with small wooded islands, with the towering grey walls of the Zugspitze behind mirrored on the still surface. Pine forests surround it, and in winter snow covers the shores and mountains. Visitors walk the loop path around the lake, hire boats and swim in summer. A cable car to the Zugspitze summit leaves from a station nearby, and early morning is the quietest time before the crowds.
