El Cobre Basilica is a large cream-coloured church on a green hill west of Santiago de Cuba. A central bell tower and two side towers are crowned with red-brick domes, a long stairway climbs to it between palms, and mountains rise behind. The church was built in 1926 in the village of El Cobre, about 19 km west of Santiago, and was made a basilica in 1977. It has three aisles and is linked to the village by a flight of 254 steps. It houses the colonial-era statue of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, Cuba's patron saint, making it the country's national shrine, visited by people from all over. You climb the steps to see the facade and towers, then look out from the hill over the village and the mountains around it. The church is about 16 km in a straight line west of central Santiago de Cuba, reached by taxi or tour. It is a place of worship, so dress modestly, keep quiet, and only go in during Mass to pray. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Cuba because of fuel, power and water shortages, so read the current advice before you plan. It also says electricity and water remain severely affected in the east after Hurricane Melissa in October 2025.
