El Shincal de Quimivil is the ruin of a city the Incas built near the town of Londres in Catamarca, an administrative and ceremonial centre for one of the provinces at the far southern edge of their empire, between the late fifteenth century and the arrival of the Spanish. It has been a National Historic Monument since 1997 and was restored for visitors between 2013 and 2015. At its heart lies a large walled square, about 175 metres a side, with a raised stone platform in the middle from which ceremonies were led. On either side of the square stand two almost identical hills with flattened tops, reached by long stone stairways, giving views over the ruins, the valley and the mountains. Around them are the remains of storehouses, dwellings and roads. A guided visit is compulsory and included in the entry fee, at set times in the morning and afternoon, so call ahead to confirm. Wear comfortable shoes; climbing the stairs takes some effort.
